Running Springs was known as Hunsacker Flats, after Abraham Hunsacker, a member of an early Mormon Battalion. Initially isolated, the area was visited only by fishermen and hunters. Logging in the San Bernardino Mountains was once done on a large scale mainly by the Brookings Lumber Company that operated on 8,000 acres between Fredalba and Running Springs, and extending near Green Valley Lake between 1899 and 1912.
