Tate Modern is Britain’s gallery of national and international modern art.
Tate Modern, Tate Britain, Tate Liverpool, Tate St Ives and Tate Online constitute the Tate group and is the most-visited modern art gallery in the world. Tate Modern holds the national collection of British art from 1500 to the present day and international modern and contemporary art. The collection includes over 70,000 artworks by over 3,000 artists. The galleries are housed in the former Bankside Power Station. Tate Modern is an example of reusing old buildings. The building still resembles the 20th century factory with steel girders and concrete floors. The collection has grown enormously in size and scope since Henry Tate’s founding gift to the nation in 1897. The main art collection consist of 4 wings and each has a named theme. In each wing there are rooms that change periodically showing different works according to the theme of the wing. Tate Modern has attracted more visitors than originally was thought. A number of new developments are planned for it as well as for Tate Britain and Tate St Ives to ensure the galleries continue to expand.
